I say roughly because certain limits have been put in place to enhance the gameplay. You see, the physics engine is roughly based on Newtonian Mechanics. Combat is epic in its simplicity and its depth. These were the first words that jumped into my head, but learning to fight is akin to learning a new martial art. When getting my copy of the backstory signed by John Bergman, the lead developer, and explaining the concept to a neighboring vendor I said it was like neuroscience kung-fu. I nearly quit my job so I could drive to Orlando (thankfully my boss was understanding) and meet the devs at a conference. Vendetta Online is getting a lot of press these days because it is one of the first native mobile MMOs, however it is first and foremost a PC (and Mac, and Linux) game. I am more interested in how your twitch skills, 3d spatial awareness and knowledge of equipment match up against my own in combat. Now I pay $160 every 2 years, which breaks down to roughly one trip to Starbucks per month.īut that is the mundane side of the experience. I was one of those players encouraging the devs to take their product live so that they could continue to develop it. The cost of a monthly subscription was something that almost caused me to balk, and probably would if I were considering joining this as a new player, yet looking back I barely even notice it. You pay the same rate as everyone else, and get access to the same game. Credits can be earned easily, and yet the most difficult objects to acquire take months if not years of planning and execution. You will get killed any time, any place, yet death means little. Vendetta Online does not pull any punches, and yet manages to avoid many of the pitfalls of other mmos to hear players tell it. By this I mean that as Vendetta Online has cycled with its seasons of development, so too has my understanding of the game and where it is headed. It was once described by an outsider as a "literature mmo" because there is a lot of reading involved, but the real game takes place out in space, with an unlimited viewpoint of the celestial disposition. This is a game that has to be played in order to be believed. It's odd because although you've probably never played Vendetta Online if statistics are to be believed, it's most likely you have heard of it if only on a subconscious level: Never before had I been put in to a game the way I dove in to Vendetta Online. It was well ahead of its time under development as a twitch based mmo with intensive 3d graphics in a market still dominated by isometric views, and remains ahead of its time to this day with its early port to mobile platforms, more of which I will describe later.īeing thrust into the virtual cockpit of a futuristic spacecraft from a first-person perspective, 2000+ years into the future with a detailed history of How We Got There is an impressive experience. To log on to the Vendetta Online server is a memorable experience, neither pictures or video do it justice. I think of Vengeance as holding to an ideal above all else, and in that sense Vendetta Online has earned its name once and again over the years. Romans 12:19 "Vengeance is mine I will repay, saith the Lord." It is something more consistent, more constant. Revenge takes place as often as on a Call of Duty server, but of course Vengeance has a deeper meaning within the cycles of action that make up the daily goings on in that virtual world. The answer to this comes easily enough those that play. So, the game could be thought of as "Vengeance Online." The word Vendetta, translated from Italian means "Vengeance." This was part of a line from the opera, displayed in English on the screen above the performer's heads. It was during a performance of Mozart's Don Giovani that I realized how much a part of my psyche Vendetta Online had become.

For reference, the beach is wider at the southern end, and there tends to be less seaweed here as well. There are several beach clubs around Playa, all with different costs, but you can also find a beach bed at a bar like Senor Frogs at the southern edge of 5th Avenue. Given that the beaches are public, you should expect beach vendors and crowds, especially if you’re staying in a hotel that’s close to the city center. Unless you’re staying directly on the beach and have access to facilities thanks to your hotel, you’re going to have to pick a place and most likely pay to be there, if you want services. That means no beds, no umbrellas, no bars, no lifeguard, and no bathroom. Like Cancun, all of Playa del Carmen’s beaches are public, but unlike Cancun’s tourist zone, there are several stretches of sand in Playa that are unequipped. Playa del Carmen: Picking a beach in Playa can be like playing Russian roulette - if you don’t know what you’re doing. The best off-the-shore snorkeling in the Hotel Zone can be found on the southern side, but if you really want to see some action, it’s best to book an excursion. free of seaweed), and you’ll probably be close to a bar and bathroom. The upside to this is that the sand will likely be maintained (i.e. That said, even though the beach is public, you’ll likely have to spend some money on food or drink if you want to plop down in a chair or under an umbrella. The beaches here are also wider and better equipped, but the latter is only because they are practically all fronted by a hotel. The only downside is that the Riviera Maya is prone to seaweed washing up on the shores, often resting in big clumps right where you want to throw down a towel or take a stroll.Ĭancun: Cancun boasts warm, clear water. The water in both places is warm year-round and is clearer when less people are around and kicking up sand. Beaches in Cancun and Playa del CarmenĬancun and Playa del Carmen are known for their beaches - gorgeous and warm turquoise water, soft white sand, and saturated sunsets included. To walk from one end to the other takes about 25 minutes at most, and cabs tend to charge a flat rate (in pesos) within the main area around 5th Avenue. Once in Playa, you can walk to most places in the main tourist area. (The ferry drops you off on the southern edge of the town, right near a Senor Frogs.) If you fly into Cancun International Airport, expect to take an overpriced taxi or shared shuttle to Playa del Carmen. Playa del Carmen: There’s no airport directly in Playa del Carmen, but as mentioned, if you port in Cozumel, it’s a quick ferry ride to Playa. Once you are in Cancun, you’ll have to take taxis to and from most places, even in the Hotel Zone. You can also reach Cancun from the popular cruise port of Cozumel, a particular favorite with the Carnival line, but you’ll have to take the 25- to 40-minute ferry to Playa del Carmen and then catch a 60-minute ride north to Cancun. The Hotel Zone is a mere 10- to 15-minute cab ride from Cancun International Airport, meaning you catch the early flight and be on the beach within a few hours, depending where you’re coming from. Flights are operated by most major airlines, though prices do fluctuate depending on the season.Ĭancun: It’s likely that Cancun became popular because of its sheer proximity to the airport. If you’re heading down to either Cancun or Playa del Carmen, flying into Cancun International Airport is your best bet. In this variation, players take turns laying tiles for the unclaimed color. When players manage two tile colors in a two-player game, the squares from both colors are simply counted and added together to determine the score.Īnother gameplay option allows three active players to “share” turns for the remaining fourth color. Plus, an extra 5 points if the last tile placed was a single 1-square block. Players earn 15 additional points if all their tiles are played, and they have no remaining tiles. Players still count the number of squares in their remaining tiles: 1 square equals 1 point. Players compete to earn the highest score in this challenging scoring variation. The player with the lowest number of squares is the winner. How to Keep Score in BlokusĪfter a two-player game, each player counts the number of squares in their remaining tiles. The game ends when players can no longer place tiles on the game board. When a player cannot play a tile, they lose a turn, and the game progresses to the next player. Once tiles are placed on the board, the tiles cannot be moved. There are no restrictions about how tiles of opposing colors are placed on the board. The flat sides of any same-colored block cannot be placed against each other, and tiles of the same color must only touch at the corners. However, the catch is that each tile must only touch another tile of the same color at the corners. Blockus RulesĮach player must start their first tile in their corner of the square-shaped board, and the starting cube must completely cover the square in the corner.Īfter each player has placed their initial tile or block in their corner, players continue to lay one tile down per turn. Players will continue to build from this starting point by laying a tile down in the corner of their board in a clockwise rotation, beginning with blue, then yellow, followed by red, and lastly, green. If two players are playing, a game variation allows player one to control red and blue tiles, while player two manages the yellow and green tiles. Each player collects all the tiles in the color of their choosing either red, yellow, blue, or green. What You’ll Need to Play BlokusĮverything needed to play Blokus is included in this boxed set. Even if you let go of the controls, the Hero will continue moving for a while before coming to a stop. Ice In jump and run games such as Super Mario Bros, some surfaces are slippery. Tip: It s a similar solution to I m Trapped! You do not need to make it so that if the Hero is half-way off the screen, he also appears halfway on the other side. Wrap Around In a retro space shooter game such as Asteroids, ships that go off one side of the screen appear on the other side. Pretend that there is an invisible wall on all 4 sides of the stage. Make it so that he s not allowed to do that. (ĥ Lesson 2 - Logical Thinking - Extra Activities I m Trapped! Right now, the Hero can walk off the screen. If you ve finished early, try some of the extra activities. Congrats! You ve written your first game from scratch. Does it work correctly, or is it not quite right? Hint: Does the actor stop moving after you lift the left and right arrow keys? 5 Moving in all 4 Directions Finally, make it so that the actor can move up and down in addition to left and right. After fixing this problem, run the game once more.Ĥ 4 Moving Left & Right Now make it so that the actor moves left if the left key is pressed down. What do you need to do? Hint: Use the otherwise block. Oops! The actor doesn t stop after you lift the key. Press the right arrow key to move the Hero. 3 Press a Key to Move Now, let s make the actor only move if the right arrow key is pressed down. The Hero will move towards the right without stopping. Use under Actor > Motion to set his speed to 10. First, let s make the Hero constantly move towards the right. This is where you ll write your program that tells the Hero what to do. Now, you ll see a colorful page with blocks. 2 Constant Motion Open up the Actor Type called Hero. Time to bring him to life! Close the game. You ll see our Hero again, but he can t do anything yet. In the next lesson, you ll learn how computers and games actually work. It is called Enemies Killed Congrats! You ve made your first game. What does into those number fields? Experiment and see what happens! The Score block can be obtained from the Game Attributes page under the Attributes category. Use the Draw Text block under the Drawing category to draw the Score to the screen. Optional Activity - Draw the Score This optional activity will introduce you to drawing data to the game screen. What exactly is happening here? Under the hood, the behavior is listening for collisions between the player and any actors that are considered enemies. Now, run the game and jump on top of the enemy. Configure the Stompable Group field to Enemies. Add the Stomp on Enemies behavior to our Hero. Let s give our Hero the ability to stomp an enemy. Instead, our Hero just lands on top, and nothing happens. 4 Stomping Enemies You may notice that jumping on top of the enemy does not kill it. Behaviors grant new abilities to Actors, letting them do more than before. What did you do? You added a Jump behavior to the Hero. Notice that the Hero can now jump! (Press the Spacebar) Hero can t jump high enough? Experiment with the Jump Force field. You may realize that the game isn t fun because the Hero can t jump. After you re done, run the game again and play through your level. Doesn t it look a bit empty? Play around with the editor by adding some blocks. Now, you ll see the level you just played. 2 Build the Stage Open up the scene called Level 1. Most consumer amplifiers use RCA input jacks. No matter what you have, connect to your amplifier (stereo system, receiver, etc) with the right cable. Add FireWire with a PCI card in your dektop or a cardbus (PCMCIA) card in your laptop, but be careful regarding card compatibility. All recent Macs have both FireWire (IEEE 1394) and USB some have USB 2. Make sure that an interface is compatible with your OS, and check that your software will "see" the interface. USB 2 (480 MB/sec) is much faster than USB 1, so don't bother with a USB 1 interface. FireWire 800 (800 MB/sec) was promising but did not last long in the marketplace. When deciding on the best protocol to connect with, FireWire (400 MB/sec) is much faster than USB 1.1 (12 MB/sec), which can choke on just a few channels. For audio recording, plan for the price of additional hard drive storage and a viable backup method. Then you can add an external mic pre with an ADAT output, such as the Focusrite OctoPre (with ADAT Interface card) or the Presonus Digimax. If you need more microphone preamps, get an interface with an ADAT input. Many manufacturers advertise "6 inputs" but some are digital (S/PDIF, ADAT optical). Technically these are not "soundcards," a term which really only applies to PCI card interfaces.īe careful to note the actual number of physical analog inputs/outputs that an interface has. Go for a FireWire or USB interface instead, for "hot-swap" flexibility and for use with laptops. Many new computers don't have PCI slots, so these days PCI soundcards are an unnecessary pain. The old term "soundcard" was used back when our only choice was a circuit board which had to be installed in your computer's PCI slot. The physical unit with input/output jacks is usually referred to as an "interface" (or sometimes an "I/O" or "breakout box"). There are dozens of outboard interfaces available which have better quality A/D/A converters, more I/O channels and extras like a volume knob. The mini-jacks built into top-of-the-line Macs and PCs use the same junky converters found in the cheapest computers. I would greatly appreciated any insight that any of you could provide.A quick introduction to improving computer audio quality with an audio interfaceįace it, your computer's built-in speakers and sound jacks are weak! So I'm still stuck undecided, there must be a solution, either a cheap regular mains powered amp or a USB amp which can be confirmed as working on a Mac. However £35 - £40 for these items doesn't even include any speakers and seems ridiculously expensive compared to the Trust Amp and speakers. (scroll down, it's the clear choice prospeaker breakout cable.Ĭombining those two products (the iFire and the breakout box) I'd have an Amp which was Mac compatible and I could plug any speakers I like into the standard connections - provided they will work together. So then I saw some other Griffin products which might help: The iFire is a firewire adaptor which gives Apple Pro speaker support to other computers like mineīut I don't have Apple Pro speakers so I thought about this Unfortunately it doesn't actually appear to be an amplifier. So then I looked around some more and sort of settled on the Griifin iMic which contrary to its name can actually be used to output sound as well. Has anybody successfully used this product with a Mac? The former seems ideal, it's only a tenner or so and I can always get some better looking speakers, I might be building my own boxes anyway. So I looked at USB amps, because that'd save me having to use an extra electrical socket and solve the battery issue with a single stone, but the only ones I've found don't claim to work on the Mac: But I don't want to have to change batteries. So you'd probably suggest a set of pc speakers. I'm not looking to blow the roof off or anything, its just that unpowered speakers that I do have are not up to the job. I don't know anything about amps, amperes, ohms, and stuff like that. What I wanted was a small amp, enough to power two small-ish speakers. I've already put in place the speaker wire necessary and just have to connect it up at each end. The speakers are not in the same room as the Mac. It sounds simple on the face of it, but bear with me. I'm looking for a really cheap solution for wiring up some speakers to my G4.
